And cheap too! I also personally think it looks pretty unique and cool. I got to thinking the other day that there must be some good purpose for those two dowel perches that came with my cockatiel's cage. Obviously I'm not going to use them for their intended purpose (dowel perches are not good for bird feet.) Then it struck me.
What you need to make this
Popsicle sticks, you can get a huge pack at the dollar store
Two dowel perches that are the same size
White Elmers non-toxic glue and a grate to keep the dowels in place
The most important thing to do at first is to measure how far apart the dowel perches need to be in order to fit inside the cage properly. I had an extra grate, so I set it on top of my cage when I measured the distance so that I could glue the pieces on in an area away from my birds. It still ended up being a bit of a tight fit, luckily the bars on my cage have a bit of give to them.
Depending on how long your dowel perches are, this part is quite tedious. I suggest having snacks and coffee next to you while you work, yummy!
After you finish the top part, give it some time to dry. I put books on top of mine, although that part is completely optional really.
So there you have it! I actually had to put Zen on it myself for a photo, but shhh! He stayed on it for a few minutes and tapped it with his beak. I haven't seen them go on it again, but I think they'll warm up to it and like it after they get used to it. A bit of millet might even entice them some more, haha.
