Homemade Pot Pie

You know those delicious pot pies in the grocery store? I remember eating them as a child, I loved them so much. But if you're a vegetarian your options are very limited (the veggie pot pies I did find were expensive and bland.) Also if you are health conscious they are not quite the best choice. Actually, I find it amusing. My aunt always goes to look at the pot pies when we are shopping, then she'll flip them over and complain about how unhealthy they are. But I found out recently they are ridiculously easy to make! And tasty. Yummy.

Ingredients:
  • Cream of potato soup
  • Mixed veggies (I used frozen, but feel free to use fresh if you want)
  • Crescent dough
  • Spices
Directions:
Mix the cream of potato, veggies and spices together. I used garlic and no salt seasoning. You can add whatever you want!

For the crusts there are two things you can do. We bought the little pie tins and put the dough in there. You could also use those Crème brûlée dishes. Additionally you could make one large pot pie, but I like the smaller ones better because you can personalize them if you are baking for more than one person.

Make sure to poke holes in the top crust and then bake at 350° for about 40 minutes. We covered ours with tin foil in the beginning so that the crust didn't burn and removed later.

Since these pot pies are personable you can make it as healthy as you want. They are certainly healthier than the frozen pot pies in the store! I also found it to be really delicious, and the crust was very good too. The top was crunchy and the inside was just like I remember those frozen pot pies to be, all soft and gooey with the creamy insides.

Weight Bashing

It amazes me how people can be so ignorant to the very meaning they are trying to convey. A while back a couple pictures constantly showed up on my facebook feed. Most of these pictures showed two women, one on the heavy end and the other very skinny - the message was that the heavier woman was a lot more attractive because she had more weight. The comments on these pictures were ridiculously bias and hurtful. I constantly saw references to how men like "real" women with curves and not "bones." A lot of people said very hurtful things about women who were below their weight standard of "beauty." I found it surprising how so many people could say that "fat-bashing" was ridiculous and wrong and that the woman was beautiful despite her "excess" weight, and yet at the same time made a comment about how "gross" it was to be skinny. I don't think they saw the irony in their statement. Let's stop "fat-bashing" and start "skinny-bashing"? What?

I've come to the conclusion that no matter how much you weigh, you are going to get judged and malicious insults thrown your way. About 500 times moreso if you are female. I'm not even going to call it fat or skinny bashing because it doesn't matter if you are considered one or the other - people judge everyone for all weights, there really doesn't seem to be a middle ground. Besides that, fat and skinny are such relative terms that it's impossible to really determine.

I have a theory that this weight bashing shows up because of the way we were raised and the society we grew up in. I don't know if this is as common in other countries as America, but I imagine it would with any well off country, and likely a lot less in third-world countries. Growing up we are taught that our bodies are pretty much disgusting. Think about it, as youngsters we had no problem running around naked with no shame. We were told to wear clothes and if we ran around naked while guests were around we might even get in trouble. Then as we get older we run into even more complicated problems. If women especially wear revealing clothes they are subject to sexual insults, harassment, and even going as far as being blamed if they are raped. Because blaming the victim makes sense, right? And if you ever went to a public school there was a good chance you were the focus of some bully. I was constantly bullied by two girls in middle school who would tell me on a daily basis that I was ugly. As I walked home one day a person even made a comment "It's not halloween you don't have to wear a mask!" Because that is hilarious and original. My self-esteem was shitty because people around me were insecure about themselves and throwing it around. It wasn't until late high school that I learned how beautiful I really am - on the inside and out. Why should I care if someone thinks I'm ugly anyway? No one is beautiful to everyone. If the standards of beauty were that cut and dry the world would be boring and everyone would eventually look the same after centuries of reproducing.

Every site I have looked at has shown the sexual crime rate in naturist colonies to be non-existent. The simple answer to "why" is that the people get so used to seeing everyone else naked that it doesn't bother anyone. Seeing naked bodies is just part of everyday life, it's normal! Our society pushes naked bodies and partially naked bodies on us as always sexual - and so we learn that. Naked bodies = sexual. But that's because of the way we were raised, not mother nature doing her thing. Otherwise naturist colonies would have a much higher sexual crime rate!

This whole mentality only makes us feel even more insecure about ourselves. If we don't ever see other regular people naked as we grow up, how are we going to feel about ourselves and our bodies? The naked bodies we are exposed to are photoshopped in magazines, websites, or porn sites. This is not a realistic expectation of what people look like. This is a main cause of self esteem issues in my opinion because we attempt to compare ourselves to the pictures of people that society says is attractive and of course we don't look like them, so we then feel like we are the only ones who don't look like this unrealistic expectation of human flesh. Men think their penises are small, women think their boobs are wrong, and also that their labia looks wonky. Then of course our weight.

I think the message should be "everyone is beautiful!" not "this girl is beautiful because she isn't a skinny model standard!" Come on guys, we can't just get better at one side and then get worse on the other. The reason people have eating disorders is because of our unhealthy mentality of the naked human body, the natural human body. Health does not factor into how much you weigh at all and due to different medical reasons, body types, and metabolism anyone can be any weight no matter how much they eat or exercise. The whole "It's unhealthy" argument just goes out the window when you have any actual understanding of health and weight.

According to these contradicting people on the internet I am a sickly looking, curve-less, ugly skinny girl who no guy could ever find attractive. Oh, I'm also unhealthy too. All I have to say to this is that I am healthy, my body type is small anyway and I can eat a LOT of food. My boyfriend also finds me very attractive, along with other people who have made passes at me without knowing me. So either I am defying the laws of nature, or the mentality of these people is incorrect. Beauty is not based on weight. Don't judge someone if they don't weigh enough or weigh too much for your standards of people. And if someone is telling you that you are too "fat" or too "skinny" then you know what? Get rid of them and find someone who respects you for you and not your body. You shouldn't have to change for someone, if they are your friend or your significant other they should be there for YOU.

Oh and another thing I found kind of funny. My dad would tell me and my brother constantly that we needed to eat more and get more "meat on our bones." If I could go back in time and change my reaction, I would have told him that I was beautiful just the way I was and that if he wanted me to change he could find a new daughter. I'm proud to be who I am. If you have a problem with me because of what I look like, that's too bad because I am not going to change it for you. If we change our views and realize that everyone is different, maybe we can stop the weight bashing and raise peoples self esteems.

Super easy platform perch

And cheap too! I also personally think it looks pretty unique and cool. I got to thinking the other day that there must be some good purpose for those two dowel perches that came with my cockatiel's cage. Obviously I'm not going to use them for their intended purpose (dowel perches are not good for bird feet.) Then it struck me.

What you need to make this

Popsicle sticks, you can get a huge pack at the dollar store

Two dowel perches that are the same size

White Elmers non-toxic glue and a grate to keep the dowels in place

The most important thing to do at first is to measure how far apart the dowel perches need to be in order to fit inside the cage properly. I had an extra grate, so I set it on top of my cage when I measured the distance so that I could glue the pieces on in an area away from my birds. It still ended up being a bit of a tight fit, luckily the bars on my cage have a bit of give to them.

Use only a dab of glue on each end of the popsicle stick. You really only need a small dot. Then you can set it on the dowel perches, make sure it is as straight as possible. If you place them at weird angles it's not going to turn out well.

Depending on how long your dowel perches are, this part is quite tedious. I suggest having snacks and coffee next to you while you work, yummy!

After you finish the top part, give it some time to dry. I put books on top of mine, although that part is completely optional really.

After it had time to dry I flipped it over and put some support pieces underneath. Probably not needed, but I felt it was a good idea. I then waited an entire day before putting it into my birds cage. The glue dried fairly fast but I wanted to be absolutely sure.

So there you have it! I actually had to put Zen on it myself for a photo, but shhh! He stayed on it for a few minutes and tapped it with his beak. I haven't seen them go on it again, but I think they'll warm up to it and like it after they get used to it. A bit of millet might even entice them some more, haha.

AFP and Narntubia

Once upon a time I saw the Dresden Dolls live at the Showbox in Seattle. If you don't know who this wondrous band was, I think you missed out! Of course they are no longer together and they have both pursued other bands. And why wouldn't I follow Amanda Palmer on her amazing journey? There really is no reason why not, she's absolutely amazing in every sense of the word! So when I got her newsletter in my email and saw that she was coming to Seattle (Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchastra) how could I say no? I scrounged up the bit of money I had, informed my comrades, and today my ticket has arrived.

Isn't it glorious? The correct answer is an overenthusiastic "Yes!"

You'll know where to find me on Sept, 30th! Adding to the awesome that is already going to happen, my three best friends are going as well (in fact, we're carpooling!) If you're jealous, go out and buy a ticket instead of grumping! If you don't live in Washington,  here is the tour list! If you don't know who AFP is, here is a video!

If you like that, you should also listen to this other song. Just note that it is not safe for work!

Alrighty, now the wonders of Narntubia! This is what you call it when you get into the depths of Youtube that show you awesome bands of awesomeness and eargasms. I've been stuck in a Narntubia loop all morning! Once you start you can't stop. Really, it's that addicting! Especially since you can easily add videos on the sidebar into a "watch later" playlist. Doesn't Youtube know I have a life to keep up with?! Here's one gem from today.

I guess today is a music sharing kind of day, isn't it? I guess I didn't mention that earlier. I love music. Especially obscure music that lives in the depths of Narntubia, brightening up the days of all those lucky enough to stumble upon them. Oh the joys of music. You should try a Narntubia trip sometime, but let me warn you to only venture there when you have the time to listen to song after song after song after... It happens, I promise. Unless you don't share the same music tastes. But that would be weird. Of course you do.

Oh look, a blog!

First blog posting, oh boy! So what is this beautiful awesome joyful blog going to be about? Oh you know, the usual. Birds, food, and random crafts. If they are failed crafts or food - even better! Oh yes, you shall all see the terrors of what happens when I fail. Pictures and all. Excited yet?

Anyhow, first thing is first. Who am I and what am I all about? Well, I already said above. I share my life with three birds named Zentavious, Samirah, and Neelix. Yes, I'm a Trekkie. Shouldn't we all be? Zen and Sam are both cockatiels and Neelix is a green cheek conure. They are all fully flighted and happy! If you have an animal with wings, you should let them use them. That's my opinion! My only regret? I don't have a good enough camera to get clear flight shots. Darn!

I am also in love with crafting and DIY things. Sometimes these don't end up well, but that's life! Cooking is also awesome, and I have a secret... I'm a sweets baby. Yep, I love me some sweets and sweets love them some Muffin (that's me, if you weren't following!) You shall all endure pictures of delicious foods, most likely lots and lots of desserts. Oh, and they are all vegetarian. I'm a salad Trekkie sweets baby. That's me in a nutshell right there.

So, if anyone actually reads this and follows - awesome! I would hope that I'm able to at least amuse some people out there, although if not that's okay too. I'll live... long and prosper. Okay okay, that was too obvious. Anyhow, here are some pictures of my birds for you to say hi to!
